We must be drinking the same Sumatran blend, as I also just did a post today on my blog discussing how stock option plan design and strategy for VC backed companies can wreak havoc with employee retention. Please check it out - I would welcome your thoughts.
I do think that not enough attention is placed on strategy or, in particular, the question of whether or not all employees should receive options. I think the argument for selective issuance has merit, but I have yet to see any startup pursue this strategy.
