Jerk Protection = (1) start hiring with people you know, (2) don't vest stock until after 1 year, (3) get world-class at interviewing. Hard work, but worth it!

I agree that you can't become a world class company without world class people. But its tough to attract world class people when you are just getting started. Giving them significant stock options might work, but it can also come back to bite you if they turn out to be world class egos or worse, world class jerks. How do you protect yourself from that?
