DO IT RIGHT: Execution with expertise is golden

Do it right, there is only one way.

That is what "execution" is about. Startups that understand that are the companies that win, big-time. They become the big kahunas of new enterprises.

The great startups don't rush. They just get it done.

The great CEOs aren't cheap. They pay for what they get.

The great core teams don't argue endlessly. They debate, decide and move on.

They execute. Get things done. Do the right things. Advance. Progress. Over hill and mountains, across waters and seas. They can and they do.

In all they do they think about doing things the right way. Sure, there are a lot of ways do act, move and grow. But what I mean is they know what not to do. They know what is not the right way. They execute with results that observers respect and admire. And they do it without looking like a bunch of lost Americans trying to play their first cricket game.

Knowing what is the right way calls for a mixture of common sense and wisdom. The first you got from your mother. The second from the school of hard knocks. That is why serial entrepreneurs are so respected by investors.

The greats operate without heroics, do not create gut wrenching stress, nor do they scream instead of debate, nor motivate using fear and threats. The greats know the challenges are great enough without adding such negatives to the people who have to win for the good of the company.

BOTTOM LINE: If your company is exhibiting behavior that is dysfunctional, step back and ask yourself "Is this the right way to run this company?" Then start asking others in your organization the same question. When you are ready to make decisions to change how things are being done, ask a wise board member and your closest friend (and spouse) to tell you how much you are contributing to the problem. When you can see that, you are well on your way to knowing how to do things right in a new enterprise. You will have added a rich brick to the construction of your unfair advantage.

Proper execution also eliminates the chance of making mistakes. You don't have to rush into things. In fact, rushing a decision can sometimes be the cause of a setback. To make sure that you do not waste time, money and energy, make the effort to do things the right way.
