"There are two in your group of four that could be your lead venture capital firm" I said to the CEO. "You need four more lead candidates to make this round of funding competitive." He agreed. He is a serial entrepreneur, experienced with raising millions from VCs. We tapped our networks and came up with four solid VC partners to go after this week.
The lead VC is the champion of your deal. He will energize the "followers" that join the round. That is how syndication works. Each group will have a lead and one or two other VCs in the round. Your goal is to get at least two and preferably three groups aggressively competing for your deal. That gives you a chance to pick from the best.
BOTTOM LINE: Begin at the top. Add smaller size later. The key is the lead VC. Aim for two or three from six you contact. Competition for your deal is your best friend.
